Sue-Shan Quek

FOUNDER, THE SUPERMARKET COMPANY
(SPRMRKT, TELOK AYER ARTS CLUB)

A hospitality maven with a penchant for art and design, Sue-Shan Quek is the founder of The Supermarket Company, which owns and operates a portfolio of well-loved culinary-cultural concepts that inspire and nurture daily life through exceptional food, thoughtfully curated retail spaces and art that ‘feeds’ the soul.

Her hospitality career began in 2012 when she opened the first SPRMRKT at McCallum Street, and diners were introduced to a redefined supermarket experience. Today, she continues to meld food, retail and art into a singular SPRMRKT experience across two locations—SPRMRKT at Cluny Court in the charming Bukit Timah enclave and SPRMRKT at STPI, an all-day riverside dining destination, catering facility and events space dedicated to hospitality and transformative experiences.

When SPRMRKT moved to Cluny Court in early 2018 and the space at McCallum Street was left vacant, Sue-Shan saw a blank slate and seized on the opportunity to launch an entirely new concept that paved the way for the next phase of The Supermarket Company, and could add to the urban social fabric of Telok Ayer. Together with music director Hasnor Sidik and a talented team of curators, DJs, chefs and bartenders, Sue-Shan founded Telok Ayer Arts Club, an inclusive multi-use venue that brings art, music, food and drink together in unexpected ways, or as she calls it, “a fresh take on the community centre”.

With Telok Ayer Arts Club, she hopes to engage both creative and curious types meaningfully through its arts, music and cultural programming—along with the enjoyments of all-day dining and daytime drinking—and shape the way Singaporeans approach the arts.
